Anthony, Norman. The Drunk’s Blue Book. First Edition. 1933. Book and dust jacket are both in very good minus condition—a beautiful copy.
This book, as delightful as any cocktail, seeks to correct a grave injustice. Though bridge players, expectant mothers, and other such groups have stacks of self-help manuals from which to choose, there were none for the drunk (until this light-hearted volume). With the assistance of cartoon illustration, the book offers etiquette for both the drinker and his beleaguered wife (“Never ask him where he’s been. You will probably read about in tomorrow’s papers.”). Particularly amusing a chapter near the end, "Drunk's Mother Goose," in which children's nursery rhymes have been reformatted for the drinker.
“Another simple [sobriety] test, which may be tried out with a policeman . . . is to see if you can kick him in the ankle. A miss is considered a sign of insobriety.”
