The English Dog at Home
Wigan, Felicity. The English Dog at Home. First Edition. 1988. Photographs by Geoffrey Shakerley.
In White Night, Jim Butcher wrote, “People love dogs. You can never go wrong adding a dog to the story.” That is absolutely true of this gorgeous book of text and photographs, which offers a fascinating view into the lives of English notables by profiling them with the whom they love above all others, their dogs. One wolfhound is outlandishly dressed in the same bright red attire that is worn by his master, a member of Irish Guards, but somehow manages to retain his dignity. A bull terrier and his master are posed on a grand Georgian staircase designed by the Capability Brown. In some chapters, the settings nearly upstage the animals. Various other breeds are featured, including famed corgis belonging to Queen Elizabeth II and her mother.
“A fascinated crowed has been known to gather in the street below to watch Humphrey [the dog]’s daily trick of chasing the blinds up the windows.”
