Bell, Clive. Art. First American Edition. Undated but circa 1914. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good condition—jacket shows rubbing to the back cover and a chips to the spine and front cover.
This is the first book by the Bloomsbury art critic. In it, he uses intellect and logic to make a compelling case that art cannot be understood by intellect and logic. Like spirituality, art exists only outside the temporal world. In its purest form, it is incapable of being manipulated by sentimentality or sympathy to representational form. Bell was inspired by Cézanne, and in turn, this book became the inspiration for the work of Ad Reinhardt. Includes b & w photographic plates.
