[Signed] Thompson, Kay. Eloise at Christmastime. Early Printing. 1958. Book is signed “Kay Thompson and ME ELOISE” in red ink on the flyleaf. Drawings by Hilary Knight. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows minor fraying to the edges.
Kay Thompson was a talented singer and vocal coach who mentored Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, and Liza Minnelli. She also upstaged Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, playing a Diana Vreeland-like fashion editor. Yet, she will be most remembered as the creator of Eloise. Not so pleased that she was being upstaged by the little girl she created, Thompson quickly took this and two other Eloise books out of print; where they remained until her death in the late 1990s. As such, vintage editions are difficult to find, and copies signed by her, even more so.
