This well-written, gossipy memoir by the English decorator Nicholas Haslam will be a delight to those who enjoy the personalities one finds in a typical NHL catalogue—Elsie de Wolfe, Diana Vreeland, the Duchess of Windsor, et al. They all make appearances, most in anecdotes not found elsewhere. Before returning to the U.K., Haslam worked for Diana Vreeland at Vogue and spent several years in Hollywood. Moreover, he is the young man referred to only as “Nicky” in one of NHL’s favorite memoirs, High Diver.
