Kjellberg, Anne. Style & Splendour, The Wardrobe of Queen Maud of Norway, 1896-1938. Second Printing. 2005. Book and dust jacket are both in near fine condition.
This book, never published in the United States, was produced in conjunction with a Victoria & Albert Museum exhibition on the wise—bordering on sublime—fashion choices of Queen Maud, the daughter of King Edward VII of Great Britain. The items from the exhibition are presented in full color photographs as they appeared in the show and are supplemented by historical photos of Maud wearing the clothes. What makes the book remarkable is how modern Maud’s choices now seem, particularly considering the overly ornate ensembles worn by contemporaries, such as her sister-in-law, the regal but matronly Queen Mary, consort of Maud’s brother King George V.

“Queen Maud … engaged with contemporary fashion throughout her life, balancing the conservatism of her royal role with her knowledge of what suited her best and her love of fashionable dress.”
