Seldes, Gilbert. The Future of Drinking. First Edition. 1930. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Illustrations by Don Herold. There is a third party gift inscription from 1930, which indicates the recipient might have been involved in the repeal of Prohibition (or was it just a tease?).
With the trend towards decriminalizing marijuana, this satirical, well-illustrated book about Prohibition is once again of the moment. Gilbert Seldes makes the case that banning a product will only assure its popularity. Praising the ingenuity of Americans, he discusses the various ways in which those in society dealt with the ban. He also puts forth the amusing (and true) proposition that though bootleggers might have been the enemies of the drys, the drys the drys were a necessary evil for the bootleggers
“The machine age wants precision and control and mastery; drink wants soft contours, a free hand, and escape.”
--Gilbert Seldes
