Steinem, Gloria. The Beach Book. First Edition. 1963. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows minor chips and light fraying, but it has fared much better than most copies of this book. Introduction by John Kenneth Galbraith. Illustrated by Chas B. Slackman.
Around the time when Gloria Steinem donned a Playboy bunny costume to become an undercover feminist, she also published this tribute to the pleasures of the beach. With its foil dust jacket, the back side of which was intended to double as a tanning aid, this illustrated book seems much more Helen Gurley Brown than Gloria Steinem. Except, it is rather literary, with excerpts of works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, and Marcel Proust. Today, Steinem acknowledges it is an anomaly in her body of work but she still claims it.
“Cary Grant is walking down the beach toward you. He is carrying a shaker of martinis. He is smiling.”
