Rowland, Helen. The Rubaiyat of a Bachelor. First Edition. 1915. Hardcover with pictorial pastedown in good plus condition—third party gift inscription and minor fraying to corners. Decorations by Harold Speakman.
Looking for an amusing book to present to a recently engaged man or perhaps a groomsman? This illustrated book might be perfect. It takes artistic license with The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, borrowing its rhyming scheme and Oriental mystique, to contemplate the unmarried man who favors romance over marriage. In most of the verses, a confirmed bachelor lays out a resounding case for remaining single (“tis better to have loved and lost [then] by a Woman to be bossed”). However, like so many single men before him, he ultimately falls victim to Cupid’s arrow.

“Into this pact, man glides like water flowing, But out of it is not such easy going.”
