Martin, E.G. Sailorman. First Edition. 1933. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—endpapers are discolored, and jacket has a well-disguised repaired tear to the front cover. Drawings are also by the author.
In the 19th Century, the Thames sailing barge was a mainstay of England’s economy. The boats were designed to float in depths as shallow as three feet and transported grains, hay, coal, and bricks throughout the Thames estuary and even to ports on the Continent. Some still existed in the 20th Century, and this author was the mate on one. As this memoir illustrates, sailing them could be a thrilling, sometimes even harrowing, experience. It is illustrated with twenty-three drawings. Would make a lovely gift for a yachtsman.
