Carol, Jacqueline. Cocktails and Camels. First Edition. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows light soiling to back cover.
This memoir/comedy of manners is an enchanting tale of life in Alexandria, Egypt in the early 20th Century. The author was part of a proper and well-off Lebanese family. She eventually married an American and moved to the United States. Contrasting the two lives, she fondly recalls her childhood. The family’s kitchen staff spins linguistic gymnastics and non-sequiturs to avoid allegations of graft. Young Jacqueline’s mother believes her daughter’s class on Shakespeare is a class taught by the teacher “Sheik Speare.” Small going away parties turn into lavish fêtes, though the honoree usually never manages to actually leave Alexandria. Lots of fun.
