Set in the heyday of the British Raj, this true story is a variation on The King and I, but here, the king is a maharajah, and the part of Anna is played by the English writer, J.R. Ackerley. He is hired to be the maharajah’s private secretary, only it turns out that position is already filled. Instead, his job consists mostly of being companion and foil. One of his first duties is to read both Spencer’s First Principles and Lewes’ Problems of Life and reconcile their conflicting theories on the existence of God. Fun.
