Whitney, Gertrude Vanderbilt. A Love Affair. First Edition. 1984. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket show edge tears, mild fraying, and a tiny chip to the rear cover.
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney was not only a sculptor; she was a patron of the arts who founded the Whitney Museum in New York. She is also remembered for her part in the most infamous custody case of the 20th Century, battling her sister-in-law for custody of her niece Gloria Vanderbilt. In fact, she wrote this novel at the end of the custody fight, as part of her attempt to return to normalcy. It concerns a love affair in set in 1930s Paris, and her biographer considered parts of it to be autobiographical. Never released in her lifetime, it was finally published by a minor press in 1984. It received little fanfare and is in short supply.
