Jacobs, Helen Hull. Beyond the Game, An Autobiography. First Edition. 1936. Book is in very good minus condition; dust jacket is in good condition—jacket shows moderate chipping, creasing, and fraying.
This scarce book is the mid-career memoir of the Depression era tennis player who won five Grand Slam singles titles but was consistently runner-up to rival Helen Wills. Her one victory against Wills was in 1933 at the U.S. Open in Forest Hills. The match became one of the big stories of the year, and it is thought Wills faked a back injury in order to forfeit the game rather finish the match she was clearly going to lose. Jacobs covers this and other stories with grace and dignity in this book. With thirty-two illustrations in aquatone.
