Raulet, Sylvie. Jewelry of the 1940s and 1950s. First American Edition. 1988. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows a repaired tear to the spine, fraying, creasing, and minor staining (staining is primarily to the underside of the jacket).
This great Rizzoli production is as dazzling as many of the jewels it depicts. With over five hundred illustrations (half in color) and weighing in at over five pounds, it covers the jewelry trends of an era that began as a rejoinder to Art Deco, was interrupted by World War II, and then, in an allergic reaction to wartime austerity, dove wholeheartedly into grand luxe. Inspiration came from the bestiary as well as from Salvador Dali and the New Look of Christian Dior. All the great jewelers from the era are included.
“The designers of the 1940s and 1950s also conquered the ocean’s depths, exploring a world whose fascination was wrought by the beauty of its designs and the combination of its colours.”
