Jullian, Philippe. The Collectors. First American Edition. 1970. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—there is a trace of sticker residue to the front cover and "Christmas '88" is written on the flyleaf. Illustrations also by Philippe Jullian.
--Philippe Jullian
The French art historian, illustrator, and writer psychoanalyzes the art collector, examining all his appetites, idiosyncrasies, and follies. He facetiously hypothesizes that 1) the leisure class indeed does have leisure time; 2) something must occupy that time; and 3) collecting is a more reputable means of doing so than philandering or alcoholism. [Some collectors triumphantly manage to juggle all three.] It is a tease. Yet, it is also informative and well illustrated.
“The real collector, like the warm-hearted lover, needs no intermediary and prefers the object of which he is fond on bare walls to a mediocre object on velvet.”--Philippe Jullian
