Lessing, Doris. Particularly Cats. First American Edition. 1967. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—a small bookplate of a previous owner has been blacked out by marker.
The British novelist and Nobel Prize winner writes of a lifetime spent with cats, beginning with her childhood in Rhodesia, which involved both the wild and domestic varieties. She then segues to adulthood in England in which she shared her home with “a spoiled, exquisite, domineering grey” and a “sturdy, modest, uncomplaining black.” It is deeply moving but unsentimental look at the complex social interaction between her two felines with particular emphasis on their distinct differences and complex interactions with her and each other.
“If a fish is the movement of water embodied, given shape, then cat is a diagram and pattern of subtle air.”
--Doris Lessing
