First published a decade earlier as Cecil Beaton’s New York, this edition was revised to reflect a dramatically different era and city, both having been forever changed by the upheavals of World War II. New York was now indisputably the most important world capital. Even Cecil Beaton himself had acquired more gravitas, having matured while traveling the British Empire as photojournalist work for the U.K.’s Ministry of War Information. Illustrated with photographs and pen & ink drawings, the book frequently compares Beaton’s home city of London with New York, contrasting its winding streets and quaint squares with vertiginous Manhattan.
