Syrie Maugham Monograph, 1978
Fisher, Richard B. Syrie Maugham. First Edition. 1978. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows irregular fading and a chip to the upper right front corner, which is disguised with a facsimile underlay.
It turns out the A Star Is Born scenario does not always play out in a couple’s lifetime. For best-selling author Somerset Maugham, that is a good thing. He surely would not be pleased that ex-wife Syrie (whom he treated terribly) dazzled in a lavish 2010 design monograph; whereas, he, once a bestselling author and household name has faded into obscurity. This early monograph on Mrs. Maugham marked the beginning of her resurgence. It includes mostly black & white (but some color) photographs of her work, as well information about her life and career.
“Most human beings neither need nor want defence. In my opinion Syrie Maugham was no exception. She had a life of her own; and her accomplishments have a quality of permanence which, like the written word, requires only that we be reminded of them occasionally.”
--Richard B. Fisher
