This large scale book, which has become a cult favorite, presents ninety-nine images of the Golden State, one image per page. The photographer Dennis Stock had long had a fascination with the mythological and surrealistic qualities of California, and in 1968, he traveled throughout the state to document those qualities. There is a fascinating array of subject matter—juxtaposition is the rule, not the exception. There is particular emphasis on beach culture and the film industry, but other subjects such as San Francisco, San Diego, and the desert are also covered. A marvelous time capsule.
