Coleman, Elizabeth Ann. The Genius of Charles James. First Edition. 1982. Book is in very good minus condition; dust jacket is in good condition—jacket was laminated by a previous owner and has now lightly bubbled. Also, there is fraying and a tape mark. Book shows light discoloration to the endpapers and a previous owner’s name is written on the flyleaf.

What was the genius of Charles James? According to this excellent book, it was that he sought not to create “an unending stream quasi-innovations” to generate publicity, but instead approached fashion as an engineer might, “analyzing and exploring a single philosophy of design.” It was somewhat antithetical to the approach of Christian Dior, but nevertheless, Dior was one his greatest admirers. Book includes many pages of illustration, including a divine watercolor illustration of James’s atelier by Beaton that is not often reproduced).  Cameos by devoted Charles James clients, such as Babe Paley and Millicent Rogers.
