The Dukes of Britain
Foss, Arthur. The Dukes of Britain. First Edition. 1986. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows mild fading to front cover and minor edgewear. Photographs by Allan Warren.
The title of duke is derived from the Latin word dux, which means senior military commander. However, as this book on the twenty-six surviving dukedoms of Great Britain makes clear, the dukedom of Marlborough is one of the few to have originated from success on the battlefield. Great wealth or possessing an ancestor who was an illegitimate offspring of a king much more likely. Book includes many images and a brief profile of each current duke (circa 1986).
“Like the rest of nobility, the dukes are on a slow boat to extinction, unless there are fresh creations.”
--Arthur Foss
