Maurier, Daphne Du. Happy Christmas. Reprint Edition. 1940. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows minor fraying.
There is lovely but understated message in this twenty-page novella, which is about the size of Christmas card (only thicker). The plot concerns an upper middle class English family’s preparations for Christmas, involving maids, cook, and chauffer. However, a world war is on the horizon, and in spite of the family’s efforts to ignore it, there is no peace on earth. They do, however, reluctantly take in husband and wife refugees whom they place not in the stable but in its 20th Century counterpart, an apartment above the garage, and the real message of Christmas reveals itself.
“If you met them anywhere you would not recognize the Lawrences as being different from any other family. Perhaps that was the trouble.”
--Daphne Du Maurier
