Mackenzie, Compton. Sublime Tobacco. First Edition. 1957. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—endpapers are discolored, and jacket shows minor chipping to the upper spine. It is price-clipped.
Compton Mackenzie’s satirical English novels, quite unjustly forgotten, were not his only output. In this work of nonfiction, he extols the pleasures of tobacco, a practice he began at age four when an American cousin gave him his first cigarette. As the plant was a gift from the New World to the Old, the book is steeped in colonial history and commerce, and contains an appreciation of tobacco in literature. The book is charming and fun. One caveat: medical science has since disproven some of the health benefits this author ascribes to tobacco.
“Without a doubt one of the major achievements of the English was teaching the rest of Europe to smoke.”
