Hergesheimer, Joseph. Tropical Winter. First Edition. 1933. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows repaired tears and fraying to the upper spine. Jacket illustration by Robert E. Locher.
Novel meets short story in this unique book. It consists of ten chapters each relating a different tale. What unites them is that they all transpire in Palm Beach café society, as the various characters grapple with love, romance, fidelity, social aspiration, and acquisition of wealth, while they sip Martinis and bathe in the sun. In one, a self-made man curbs his spouse’s rapacious social climbing. In another, a character travels to Florida to reunite with a long lost paramour, only to discover that he is now more attracted to her daughter.
“Money is no good for itself. In the end it can’t buy a damned thing but pleasure.”
--Joseph Hergesheimer
