Thurlow, Valerie. Model in Paris. First Edition. 1975. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition.
Never published in America, this excellent memoir relates the story of an Essex girl who began modeling in Swinging London but soon upped the ante by relocating to Paris, where she became a top mannequin for Balmain. Bold-faced names abound, but what is fascinating here is her insightful commentary on the 1960s fashion scene. In one passage, she wonders whether women’s liberation will condemn her gender “to the same mass mediocrity now enjoyed by modern man.” In another, she theorizes that the mini-skirt was invented simply to shock English men into finally paying attention. Includes illustration.
“Englishmen are best appreciated from a good distance. Ever since I went to live in Paris I have had nothing but nostalgia for them.”
