Nichols, Beverley. Sunlight on the Lawn. First American Edition. 1967. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Drawings by William McLaren.
Nichols meanders further down the lane he began twenty-five years earlier in Down the Garden Path as he describes his ever-evolving garden and the eccentric cast of characters he encounters in, around, and regarding it. In this installment, his trusted groundskeeper must retire due to old age, and Modernism threatens Nichols’s way of life and that of his neighbors. And as middle age advances, the addition of a balustrade to his garden becomes more of a necessity than a decoration.
“I do believe very firmly that there exists a ‘radiation’—for lack of a more explicit word—between the soil and ourselves, and that if this radiation is disturbed we are in some sense incomplete.”
--Beverley Nichols
