Sackville-West, V. Nursery Rhymes, An Essay. First Trade Edition. 1950. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows repaired tears. Drawings by Philippe Jullian.
This erudite book about nursery rhymes, with lovely decorations throughout by the marvelous Philippe Jullian, is geared towards the parent, the narrator of the stories. However, the child listener will ultimately benefit. V. Sackville-West discusses the purpose and tradition of the tales and then analyzes them individually. She explores the historical basis of seemingly nonsensical phrases. The “cat and the fiddle,” for example, most likely refers to Henry VIII’s unfortunate first wife Catherine of Aragon (Catherine la fidèle).
“Mother Hubbard’s cupboard may be empty, but at least her dossier is full.”
