[Signed] Hillary, Edmund. High Adventure. First Edition. 1955. Book and dust jacket are both in very good minus condition—both pages and jacket show light foxing, and jacket shows repaired tears and chipping. Signed by Edmund Hillary on the half-title page. Maps by A. Spark and sketches by George Djurkouic.
This is Edmund Hillary’s gripping account of his historic ascent of Mount Everest with the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Hillary returned to great fanfare and a knighthood from the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II, but he never lost his humility. That is evident in this exciting but unassuming account of the expedition. Though the book includes photographic plates and also drawings, there is no snapshot of Hillary on Everest. According to Hillary, Sherpas have an extraordinary skill set, but photography was not then one of them.
“As far as I knew, he had never taken a photograph before, and the summit of Everest was hardly the place to show him how.”
