[Signed Presentation] Hitchcock, Jane Stanton. Social Crimes. First Edition. 2002. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is warmly inscribed, “To Nancy Robertson—with many thanks for all your support. As my heroine says, ‘I may not remember, but I never forget,’ Fondest regards, Jane Stanton Hitchcock.”
How fitting that the inscription in this copy refers to an aphorism from the book, because this page-turner about New York society is jam-packed with them. Equal parts wisdom and mirth, they flow effortlessly into the fast-moving plot in which a deposed socialite discovers that “being poor in New York is hideously expensive.” Most of the characters are stand-ins for actual Manhattan personalities. Clara Wilamen, for example, is based upon the author’s close friend Jacqueline Onassis.
“It’s always difficult to convince people who move to New York that many of the people they really want to know are ones they’ve never heard of.”
