[Signed Presentation with Letter Laid In] Rensselaer, Philip Van. Mother Was Always in Love. First English Edition. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is signed, “For Maggie + Clyde, all best wishes, from Philip Van Rennselaer, New York, 1959.” Also, a letter on Van Rensselaer’s stationery is laid in thanking Mrs. Clyde Newhouse for her suggestions for the book’s launch party and stating how much he enjoyed seeing her the other night at Dorothy Kilgallen’s.
This autobiographical novel was the first from this handsome man about town, a scion of the colonial Dutch family that once owned vast swaths of New York real estate. Violet is one of the main characters in the book, which is why the laid in letter references violets for the launch party and Violet perfume for the gift bag.
“Wouldn’t you rather have a grand affair end in some passionate crime, or some exquisite suicide, rather than peter out miserably in just plain boredom?”
--Philip Van Rensselaer
