Byng, Douglas. Byng Ballads. First Edition. 1932. Hardcover in white boards with pictorial front cover. It is in very good minus condition—covers show light fraying and some soiling. Decorations by Clarke Hutton.
This book of verse packages droll wit with marvelous color illustration. The author was a West End comic singer and songwriter. Published only in the United Kingdom, the perspective is sophisticated English society. Among other subjects, the poems gently poke fun of hunting, the Ballets-Russes, Victorian prudery vis-à-vis their libertine Georgian predecessors, and chic London parties. Each poem is accompanied by a full-page color illustration as well as by b & w line drawing.
“In Georgian days we had very gay ways/Which apparently shocked the Victorian/Our jests and bon mots/Were decidedly low/And our ballads were somewhat Gregorian.”
--Douglas Byng
