[Signed, Original Drawing] Cocteau, Jean. The Eagle Has Two Heads. First English Edition. 1948. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—endpapers are discolored and there is tear to seam; and jacket shows fraying, edge tears, and a chip to the lower spine. Book is inscribed “a C.L. Baldwin, Jean Cocteau, New York, 1948” on the half title page. On that same page, Cocteau has drawn a man in profile.
This is the theatrical version of Cocteau’s Surrealistic story loosely based upon Empress Elizabeth of Austria. In December 1948, Cocteau flew to the New York premier of the film adaptation, which is most likely when and where this copy was inscribed.
“The real tragedy of [princes] that rise above their parts is that they are ideas rather than human beings. Besides, it often happens that they are killed by another idea.”
--Jean Cocteau
