[Signed by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn] Nureyev, Rudolph. Nureyev, An Autobiography. First American Edition. 1963. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good plus condition—jacket shows a few small chips, minor tears, fraying, and rubbing. Book is signed “Margot Fonteyn Arias” on the half title page and “Rudolph Nureyev” on the page opposite the title page. Photographs by Richard Avedon and others.
Rudolf Nureyev said of Margot Fonteyn, “We danced with one body, one soul. Margot is all I ever had, only her.” She was more self-deprecatory, quipping, “Rudolf? I was just his London nanny.” The truth is they forged one of the most extraordinary partnerships in the history of the ballet, begun when she was at the age when most dancers retire and he a recent Russian defector. It is uncommon to come across a book signed by both.
“To me a work of art is something alive. To be true to the spirit is, to my mind, much more important that to be what is called correct; for that, in fact, may be less correct, in that it is false to the original idea.”
