[Signed] Foner, Philip S. (ed.) Jack London, American Rebel. First Edition. 1947 Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows light fraying and a few tiny chips. Book is warmly inscribed, “To Henry P. Slaughter, with very best wishes from an admirer, Philip S. Foner, Dec 5, 1947.”
Jack London, writer of classics like The Call of the Wild, is one of America’s beloved authors. What is forgotten, however, is that he was one of its most radical. This book collects and interprets his political writings, many of which were well past classification as simply progressive. Theory and practice, however, often diverge, and, as this book notes, London’s ideas did not always jive with his own lifestyle. The book explores that divergence.
“I was born in the working-class. Early I discovered enthusiasm, ambition, and ideals; and to satisfy these became the problem of my child-life. . . Above me towered the colossal edifice of society, and to my mind the only way out was up.”
