Miller, Henry. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare. First Edition. 1945. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in very good minus condition—jacket shows light fraying and minor edge tears.
There is often no one quite so cynical as the heartbroken idealist. Expatriate writer Henry Miller falls into that category. The book is the story of Miller’s travels around the United States in the early 1940s, following many years of living abroad. As is apparent from the title, he dislikes some of what he sees, but his beef is mostly with the machine age. When he leaves the big city behind, he finds more to admire, and writes about those experiences with humor and affection.
“The only way to see America is by automobile—that’s what everybody says. It’s not true, of course, but it sounds wonderful.”
