[Signed] Traina, John. Extraordinary Jewels. First Edition. 1994. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—upper right corner is bumped, and jacket shows rubbing. “To Bill, Thought you’d like Coco’s photo best of the ones in here! Best wishes, John Traina, Oct. 1994.” Foreword by Danielle Steele.
This image-filled book reviews thirty-seven major jewelry designers. Particularly fascinating are the “Notable Acquisitions” lists for each jeweler, which covers who bought what. The Duchess of Windsor, Princess Grace of Monaco, and the Shah of Iran are just a few of the bold-faced names in those sections. In regard to the inscription, do not go searching for a photo of Coco Chanel. The “Coco” to whom Traina refers is his pot-belied pig. Coco is pictured stuffed into strands of pearls, looking much like Elsa Maxwell might in the same necklace.
“The comparison of outstanding stones, and the recognition of unusual stones and colors, variations of cut and quality, became a fascination to me.”
