[Third Party Gift Inscription by Lady Edwina Mountbatten] Lady Hartog. India in Outline. First Edition. 1944. Book is in very good condition. Book inscribed on the flyleaf, “With best wishes, Edwina Mountbatten, Jul 1944.”
In the 1930s, a fortune-teller told Lady Edwina Mountbatten, “One day you will be sitting on a throne, not an ordinary throne but a real throne nonetheless.” Perhaps Lady Mountbatten had this in mind when she inscribed this book about India in 1944, two years prior to becoming its final Vicereine. Hopefully, she purchased a copy for herself as well. The Spectator praised it as a “marvel of compression,” proclaiming the book contained an extraordinary amount of information without ever becoming “dull or bewildering.” A great association copy.
“With the faith of the mystic, Mr. Gandhi combines the astuteness of the politician.”
