[Signed by Bette Davis] Stine, Whitney. Mother Goddam, The Story of the Career of Bette Davis. First Edition. 1974. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. Book is inscribed on the half title page, “Am so pleased you enjoyed this book. I think Mr. Stine did a ‘smashing’ job! Hello Herb Yellin. Bette Davis.” Running commentary by Bette Davis. Dust jacket illustration by Michaele Vollbracht.
Whitney Stine, at age eight, became a huge fan of Bette Davis. That blossomed into an expertise by adulthood. There are few who know more about Hollywood and its Golden Age than did Stine. He penned several books about Davis, but this is one of the most unique. Stine wrote the text, which Davis reviewed and then injected her own commentary, which is interspersed throughout the book and presented in a contrasting color of ink.
“My one regret about the era in which I made films was the lack of freedom to be honest. Due to censorship, we constantly had to prostitute our scripts—and thus hurt the honesty of our performances.”
--Bette Davis
