[Signed] Taylor, Elizabeth. Elizabeth Taylor, An Informal Memoir. First Edition. 1965. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition—jacket shows minor fraying near the edges, and it is price-clipped. An envelope laid in is signed “Best wishes, Elizabeth Taylor” in her typical purple ink pen.
One of the most thought-provoking observations about Elizabeth Taylor was made by Peter Harry Brown. He wrote, “Liz has always had a charming way of minimizing the public hurricanes that have raged around her. Perhaps this is because she is always operating from the comparative calm of the eye of the storm.” There was a sense of compassion and earthiness in Taylor that transcended the tabloid nature of her lifestyle. It comes across in this memoir in which she writes about life in the eye of that very glamorous storm.
“During the first few weeks of shooting [Who Is Afraid of Virginia Woolf], Martha completely took me over. When I left the set, I couldn’t take off my Martha suit. Richard and I would be out with friends and I’d hear myself saying to him, ‘For Chrissakes, shut up.’”
