[Signed Association Copy] Foreman, John. The Vanderbilts and the Golden Age, Architectural Aspirations, 1879-1901. First Edition. 1991. Book and dust jacket are both in very good condition. This copy contains a tipped inscription from J. Watson Webb, Jr., who was a Vanderbilt (and also a Havemeyer) to Elyse Harmon who was a midcentury model and actress. In the note, he writes, “I’m so happy that the full story of Grandpa Webb has finally been told.” Book is also signed by John Foreman and the co-author Robbe Pierce Stimson. Laid in is a sheet in which J. Watson Webb, Jr. corrects the captions for the chapter in the book on which he consulted.
This coffee table book covers fourteen homes constructed by various Vanderbilts, with one chapter on Shelburne Farms, the home of Eliza Vanderbilt Webb.
“It’s hard not to be moved by Shelburne’s mixture of spacious natural setting and unfettered architectural grandeur. Everything—mountain vistas, rolling forest, Lake Champlain, the main house, even the barns—is very vast.”
--John Foreman
