[Signed] Sackville-West, V. All Passion Spent. First American Edition. 1933. Book is in very good minus condition; dust jacket is in very good condition—purple cloth boards show fading to the spine, and jacket flaps are slightly trimmed. Book is signed “V. Sackville-West” on the flyleaf.
V. Sackville-West created one of her most memorable characters in the truly noble Lady Slane, a recently widowed wife of an English earl and a former Vicereine of India. She played the part of dutiful wife and mother for the better part of a century, not because society demanded it, but out of love for her ambitious and charming husband. His death frees her to correct her destiny and live the simple life of an artist, emancipated from her status-oriented children who never truly knew their mother and never will. Lovely.
“She had loved him so much that even her resentment was subdued. She could not grudge him even the sacrifice he had imposed on her. Yet she was not one of those women whose gladness in sacrifice is such that the sacrifice ceases to be a sacrifice.”
