Ronald Firbank had been dead twenty years when New Directions publishing house elected to pursue an old direction and revive his novels. This book followed the enthusiastic response to a Firbank collection New Directions released the year prior. That the jacket is credited to “Andrew Warhol” means it dates back to Warhol’s salad days as a fashion illustrator working for Diana Vreeland at Harper’s Bazaar, when her nickname for him was “Andy Paperbag,” because that was how he delivered his sketches to the magazine.
