Keogh, Theodora. The Double Door. First Edition. 1950. Book is in very good condition; dust jacket is in good condition—jacket shows light chipping and staining. Dust jacket illustration by Tom Keogh.
This novel revels in the dark side of fashionable society, with themes of grifting, debauchery, and fortune hunting. It is as if someone took the characters of Edith Wharton and inserted them into a book by Patricia Highsmith. This was Theodora Keogh’s milieu, and she writes about it well. The story is based upon the Marquis de Cuevas and his wife, a Rockefeller heiress. The double door of the title connects adjoining townhomes owned by the same family, one of which is reserved for the disreputable male friends of the Marquis de Cuevas character.
“An accent meant glamour and mystery, an English accent meant gentleman as well.”
--Theodora Keogh
