The Weymouth family was much in the news in 1954. In that year, Daphne Weymouth Fielding published her memoir Mercury Presides about her eccentric childhood and her marriage to the Marques of Bath. Given the libertine nature of her marriage (particularly during World War II), her memoir could have been a page turner. Alas, she erred on the side of discretion. Her friend Evelyn Waugh was baffled, commenting in a letter to Lady Diana Cooper that it was if General Montgomery "wrote his life and neglected to mention that he had ever been in the army."
Her brother Lord Vivian (Anthony Weymouth) was a mainstay in the tabloid press that same year after being shot in the abdomen at close range by his jealous lover Mavis Wheeler. She was prosecuted and served six months in prison for malicious wounding. All was forgiven, however. The couple was photographed together on the day of her release, and according to Nicky Haslam "lived happily ever after."
