The subject arose at a 1982 dinner at Elaine's that Dotson Rader arranged to introduce his friends Tennessee Williams and Margaux Hemingway. At that time, Williams was working on a play, Clothes for a Summer Hotel, about the friendship between Margaux's grandfather Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The great playwright voiced Gertrude Stein's suspicion that Hemingway might have been secretly gay. Margaux rejected this idea but with the caveat that it would not have mattered to her if he were.
