V. Sackville-West, All Passion Spent
In her most successful novel, V. Sackville-West created one of her most memorable characters in the truly noble Lady Slane, a recently widowed wife of an English earl and Viceroy of India. She played the part of dutiful wife and mother for the better part of a century, not because society demanded it, but out of love for her ambitious and charming husband. His death frees her to correct her destiny and live the simple life of an artist, emancipated from her status-oriented children who never truly knew their mother and never will.
