In February 1968, Cecil Beaton wrote in his diary that he had attended the ballet with a female friend. In his account of the evening, he noted that the strain of the last five years had aged his friend, but it did not show “in photographs and she is still the most photogenic person in the world, infinitely more so than her infinitely more beautiful sister.”

Cecil Beaton had attended the ballet with the infinitely photogenic Jacqueline Kennedy whose sister, Lee Radziwill, he found to be infinitely more beautiful in person. Writing in 1968 about events that had aged her five years earlier, he would obviously have been referring to the 1963 assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy.
The sisters were close in childhood and throughout the glittering years of Camelot. As young women, they traveled together for a summer in Europe and created an illustrated scrapbook of their adventures. They published it in the 1970s as One Special Summer. A copy signed by Lee is available via the Nick Harvill Libraries store.
